Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a borrowing service for ECSU students, faculty, and staff that supports scholarly research. Through this service you can request books, articles, and other materials that are not available at the ECSU Libraries.

Completion of Forms:

Interlibrary Loan Forms can be obtained from the Reference Department as well as online. One form must be submitted for each item requested. To avoid delays, provide complete citation information for the materials requested. Requests with incomplete information will be returned for completion, delaying the processing.

Copyright Law

The U.S. Copyright Law (U.S. Code, Title 17) governs the use of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If the user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes other than that of "fair use" that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

Limitations and Restrictions

Patrons must have current library cards and library accounts must be free of fines. Interlibrary Loan request are limited to ten (10) pending requests per week per person will be processed. When submitting requests, patrons may be asked to indicate priority. Materials ordered through Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on Reserve for a course. ILL staff will only request the same item for the same patron up to three times. Renewals must be made at least four days prior to the due date. Renewals will not be processed on overdue books. Materials must be returned on time...repeat offenders will lose ILL borrowing privileges. Do not return books in book drop. Requests for Interlibrary Loan will not be accepted or processed from December 12th to January 2nd of every year. Patrons should plan their research needs accordingly. All request must be returned prior to December 12th unless due date is after January 2nd.

Patron's Resposibility

  1. Searching the Catalog to determine if the item is owned by ECSU.
  2. Making sure that citations are complete and accurate. This means that journal titles should NOT be abbreviated on the request forms.
  3. Indicating a maximum cost willing to pay for item(s).
  4. Reading copyright statement.

Who is eligible to use ILL?

Only current ECSU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use interlibrary services at ECSU. All others must use the public library for their interlibrary loan needs. Interlibrary services are not available at this time to retiree, alumni and Friends of the Library.

How do I get my documents?

Students, faculty, and staff are notified by email or phone when their requests have arrived at the library. The patron may also call 335-8513 to check on the status of their request. All books or similar items which must be returned will have a book strap attached to the front page of the item. This strap will indicate the Patron's name and an ILL number. The strap should never be removed from the item. The strap will include the following instructions:

  • Patron Name
  • The date the item is due back in G. R. Little Library
  • Where to return the item
  • Instructions regarding renewals

All loaned items should be picked up promptly as some libraries only allow two to three weeks use. If the Patron has not made a renewal request(s) for the loaned item(s) under the terms listed on the Date Due strap, the item must be returned to the lending library. Arrangements can be made to re-request items if necessary.

Terms of Loan

The loan period, renewals, charges, and conditions of use are determined by the lending library. All materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan must be returned to the Interlibrary Loan Desk of G. R. Little Library by the date indicated. If a renewal is necessary, a request for a renewal must be made four days before the date it is due back in G. R. Little Library. Late items will not be renewed. The Patron will be responsible for any late fees or replacement costs which accrue while the patron is in possession of items obtained through Interlibrary Loan. These costs will be set forth by the lending library. Items remain the responsibility of the Patron until they are received at the Interlibrary Loan Desk. Materials may be recalled at anytime.

Various factors can affect the time it takes to fill a request. It can take anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks to receive ILL materials. Please consider this before ordering and conduct your research accordingly.
